Sourcing Details:

Having the support of an export company year after year builds a producer’s confidence resulting in excellent coffee.  This is certainly the case between Mastercol, a Colombian export company, and Juan Carlos Losada, a producer with more than 20 years of experience working in coffee.  Juan Carlos has three farms that collectively make 55 acres of coffee cultivation located in the municipality of Gigante, Huila.  Juan Carlos is motivated to produce natural processed coffees because he knows he has the support of Mastercol.

Processing details:

Mastercol has helped Juan Carlos learn to process coffee using the natural process.  Ripe cherries for this natural processed coffee are carefully hand sorted and floated to remove less dense beans and then macerated for a prolonged period of 82 hours.  Next the cherries are placed on raised beds in thin layers and moved regularly with a mixed exposure to sun and shade to slowly and evenly reduce moisture.

Exporting details:

Mastercol also provided crucial cupping evaluations, as well as, logistical support for things like warehousing and milling the coffee before export to the international market, translating into better income for Juan Carlos so he can reinvest in his farm and strengthen his family’s livelihood.
