If I had to nominate one word to describe the coffee trade this year, “uncertainty” might be the top choice… except that there seems to be at least one surefire truth regardless of underlying market conditions: people keep drinking it. Incredibly enough, it seems like folks are still willing to spend real money on good coffee. It’s an honor for me personally to help connect the dots between producer and roaster and coffee drinker.
Crown Jewel releases had an incredibly strong second quarter, with over 800 boxes of 18 different unique coffees added to our menu. The next few months should easily exceed that volume. Strap in for a season of heavy-hitting arrivals.
July 2025: New Crown Jewel Coffees
🇹🇿 Tanzania
We added an impressive lineup of Tanzanian coffees this month: washed and natural Gesha, natural SL28, and Simba varieties. These were a joy to taste and work with here at The Crown. Thanks to the Vohora family’s excellent farming and processing. The Vohora family have outdone themselves again.
🌋 Sumatra
Two innovative arrivals from Aceh landed this month with aplomb: a Lychee Coferment Wet-Hull and a Slow Dry Natural. Big fruity flavors and iconoclastic styles from Aceh, a region rife with innovative coffees but undeservingly pigeonholed into classic “Mandheling” style wet-hulled options.
🇪🇹 Ethiopia
Landing at the end of the month, we’re hotly anticipating our next selections, organic coffees from Tewabech Tilo (natural) and Desta Gola (washed), sourced through our export partner Konga Trading.
🇨🇷 Costa Rica
Sselections from CoopeDota (El Vapor, natural) and Bryan Rivera (Natural, Red Bourbon) impressed us on the cupping table, and we can’t wait for them to arrive, also with an expected arrival of the end of the month. Joining them will be the infamous stunning El Diamante Anaerobic – the gingerbread coffee – once again making an appearance on the menu.
🇭🇳 Honduras
While there are a few boxes of last month’s stunners still on sale, we’ve got one more trick up our sleeves. Old friends and Development Stage 2024 participants Marysabel Caballero and Moises Herrara hooked us up with a small, special selection of washed SL variety, expected to arrive at the end of the month.
August
🇰🇪 Kenya
Hot on the heels of July’s late-month arrivals, we’ve got an early August ETA for three exceptional Kenyan coffees – old stalwart favorites Mahiga and Gatugi, washed AA selections) and a natural from Ichamama. Get ready.
September
🇨🇴 Colombia
We just contracted a large amount of coffee from superstar producer Edwin Noreña, who will be joining us in September for Development Stage 2025. While the bulk of the coffee will arrive later in the year, we decided to fly in a little of each for the event. We’ll likely drop a very limited number of boxes for sale, for the early birds.
🇲🇽 Mexico
Our only Mexican Crown Jewel this year will be a washed Marsellesa variety from Finca Fatima in Veracruz. This is a new producer in our network, and we’re thrilled to showcase their amazing coffees.
🇪🇹 Ethiopia
From mid-September and running through the beginning of October our supercharged lineup of new Ethiopian coffees will start popping off. Here’s a preview of that list of rock stars:
- Yirgacheffe Natural Gedicho Nafkot Admasu and Yirgacheffe Natural Wegida Birtukan, single farmer lots, and a Slow Dry Natural from Gedeb… all through brand new supplier Ephtah Specialty Coffee, a woman-founded and focused sourcing group.
- Sidama Natural Bokasso, an impressive coffee from the omnipresent SCFCU
- Guji Carbonic and 3-Day Anaerobic – a couple of coffee for the heads, these are the wild ones, overtly fruity and ready to rearrange your tastebuds
- And last, but hardly least, a White Honey from Worka Chelchele and Red Honey from Danche, these are gently processed coffees with incredible floral notes and lush citrus and stone fruit flavors for folks that want those classic washed Yirgacheffe flavors with the volume turned up just enough to engross you without disturbing the neighbors.
We’re looking forward to sharing all of these new Crown Jewel coffees with you. It’s shaping up to be a season of big flavors, innovation, and exceptional craft.
